Broché : 20 € | Format ebook Kindle : 4,99 €John Silas Reed est un militant et écrivain américain né à Portland aux Etats-Unis en 1887 qui mourut à Moscou en 1920 en pleine révolution bolchevique à laquelle il était partie prenante. Journaliste et socialiste, il est connu comme l'auteur de deux reportages sur des révolutions : Le Mexique insurgé (1914) et le présent livre : Dix Jours qui ébranlèrent le monde (1919), ainsi que d'un reportage de guerre (La guerre dans les Balkans - 1916). Il y raconte la prise du pouvoir en Russie par les Bolcheviks sous la direction de Lénine. John Reed suivit ainsi les premiers temps de la révolution russe décrivant le parcours de plusieurs leaders bolcheviks, Grigory Zinoviev et Karl Radek principalement. John Reed meurt en 1920, après la publication de son livre. Seul Américain à être enterré au Kremlin auprès des plus éminents leaders soviétiques. Lénine en recommanda la lecture, écrivant en 1920 : «nbsp;Voici un ouvrage que j'aimerais voir imprimé à des millions d'exemplaires et traduit en toutes langues, car il décrit de manière véridique et extraordinairement vivante des événements d'une importance considérable pour l'intelligence de ce qu'est la révolution prolétarienne, de ce qu'est la dictature du prolétariat. » Par contre Joseph Staline n'exprimera pas pareil enthousiasme. Son désaccord porte particulièrement sur Léon Trotski qui est magnifié comme un héros révolutionnaire, tandis que Staline lui-même est réduit à une silhouette secondaire et mentionné une seule fois dans une liste de noms. Inacceptable pour Staline : Le livre de Reed fut donc banni. Le livre de John Silas Reed est aujourd'hui un grand classique des événements survenus lors des premiers temps de la révolution russe de 1917. In this trenchant exposé of Russia’s totalitarian pathology, Kovalev—who was a member of Mikhail Gorbachev’s secretariat and also worked in the foreign affairs ministry under Boris Yeltsin and Vladimir Putin—blames the country’s enduring “slave psychology” for many of its ills, from the time of the czars to the present. The author, whose high-level career took him into the apogee of government power and whose own father was an eminent Soviet diplomat, approaches the unending Russian cycle of tear-down, reaction, revanchism, and stagnation like a social psychologist. In his early job in the late 1980s, Kovalev worked on the “elimination of punitive psychiatry,” which has helped him diagnose Russia’s chronic problems. Perhaps his current exile in Belgium—he found the Putin regime to be too politically oppressive,” and he includes a horrifying chart delineating the attacks on and murders of journalists and editors since 2001—has allowed him the freedom to skewer the unchecked power of the “secret services,” which took on new life after the failed 1991 coup against Gorbachev. Kovalev methodically works through the stages of this failed coup as reflections of the same “monster” of totalitarianism that the liberal reforms of Gorbachev were supposed to eliminate. Under Yeltsin, a “new elite” formed (really just a replica of the old elite), assuming new powers under former KGB chief Putin, whose apotheosis demonstrated that the Russian population could still be manipulated into “subordinat[ing] its own real interests to the sham interests of the state.” Moreover, Putin capitalizes on the Russian sense of nostalgia for the strong-armed leader who reverts to the familiar ideological dogmatism, sounding the hollow notes of the “National Idea”—i.e., patriotism, Russian Orthodoxy, suspicion of mysterious “interventionists,” need for secrecy, renewed imperialism, infantilism, xenophobia, and so on. Ultimately, Kovalev brings us back to the totalitarian state that won’t go away. Too dense and scholarly for some general readers but astonishing in its relentless frankness and a refreshing report from an insider. The character of the last Tsar, Nicholas II (1868-1918) is crucial to understanding the overthrow of tsarist Russia, the most significant event in Russian history. Nicholas became Tsar at the age of 26. Though a conscientious man who was passionate in his devotion to his country, he was weak, sentimental, dogmatic and indecisive. Ironically he could have made an effective constitutional monarch, but these flaws rendered him fatally unsuited to be the sole ruler of a nation that was in the throes of painful modernisation. That he failed is not surprising, for many abler monarchs could not have succeeded. Rather to be wondered at is that he managed, for 23 years, to hold on to power despite the overwhelming force of circumstances. Though Nicholas was exasperating, he had many endearing qualities. A modern audience, aware - as contemporaries were not - of the private pressures under which he lived, can empathise with him and forgive some of his errors of judgement. To some readers he seems a fool, to others a monster, but many are touched by the story of a well-meaning man doing his best under impossible conditions. He is, in other words, a biographical subject that engages readers whatever their viewpoint. His family was of great importance to Nicholas. He and his wife, Alexandra, married for love and retained this affection to the end of their lives. His four daughters, all different and intriguing personalities, were beautiful and charming. His son, the family's - and the nation's - hope for the future, was disabled by an illness that had to be concealed from Russia and from the world. It was this circumstance that made possible the nefarious influence of Rasputin, which in turn hastened the end of the dynasty. This story has everything: romance and tragedy, grandeur and misery, human frailty and an international catastrophe that would not only bring down the Tsar but put an end to the glittering era of European monarchies.
