Durant l'été 2015, le collectif d’artistes russes Gorod Ustinov est invité au MSK.

Leur nom fait référence à la ville – « Gorod » en russe – Ustinov, qui n'a existé que durant 900 jours, entre 1984 et 1987. Tous les membres du collectif sont nés pendant cette période. Leur travail, qui se réfère à cette ambivalence historique, est créé dans un cadre imaginaire propre, dans lequel lieu, temps et espace sont virtuels.

Le ressenti et l’exploration de l'espace y jouent un rôle crucial. Ils se focalisent sur la micro-analyse, tant dans l'utilisation des matériaux les plus petits qu’en ce qui concerne la durée d’utilisation souvent courte de leur existence éphémère.

Parallèlement, ils se concentrent sur ce qu'ils appellent la « micro-communication », c’est-à-dire la communication intense qui se produit entre les gens quand ils créent et exposent de l'art ensemble. Le processus de création prend du temps, et les participants sont donc invités à faire preuve d’un maximum de concentration, d'autant plus qu'ils doivent se sentir un avec l'espace, qui est d'abord ressenti comme petit et restrictif, mais, après un examen plus approfondi, possède une richesse particulière. En tant qu'artistes, ils veulent accorder de l’attention et « libérer » du temps pour d’autres, qui « libèrent » du temps en tant que visiteurs pour l’observer et l'interpréter à leur tour. Tel est l'effet de l'art.

Le projet « Factories of Free Time: Micro-Museum » est en réalité un projet qui s’adresse à tout un chacun. Il s’agit d’ateliers ouverts où des gens de tous âges – enfants, jeunes, adultes – collaborent dans des contextes en constante évolution. Il s’agit d’une forme contemporaine d'art populaire qui ne nécessite ni compétences particulières, ni techniques spéciales, ni matériaux coûteux. Pour le collectif Gorod Ustinov, c’est l’élan avec lequel le public participe et vit activement le processus créatif pour arriver à un art collectif, hautement différencié, qui prime. Spécifiquement pour le MSK, ils veulent faire un «« micro-musée de Gand ». Pour cette raison, les habitants de la ville, mais aussi extra muros, sont invités à apporter des objets pour le musée, afin de créer ainsi leur propre musée dans le musée.

Le projet « Factories of Free Time : Micro-musée de Gand » est réalisé en collaboration avec le FRAC Lorraine à Metz et la Fondation Antoni Tàpies à Barcelone, dans le cadre d’un projet européen.

In the summer of 2015, the MSK will play host to the Russian artist collective Gorod Ustinov. Their name refers to the town – ‘Gorod’ in Russian – of Ustinov which only existed for 900 days, from 1984 to 1987. All members of the collective were born during that period. Their work refers to this historical ambivalence and is created in an imaginary framework of its own, in which place, time and space are virtual realities. Feeling and exploring the space plays a crucial role in that process. Their focus is on microanalysis, in the use of the smallest materials as well as in the often brief lifecycle of their throwaway existence.

At the same time, their focus goes to what they call « microcommunication », the intense communication that grows between people when they create and exhibit art together. The genesis of art takes time and demands the utmost concentration from the participants, especially as they must feel at one with the space which at first is perceived as small and restrictive, but on closer scrutiny has a special richness about it. As artists, they want to give attention to and ‘make time’ for others, who as visitors in turn « make time » to study and interpret it. That is how art works.

The « Factories of Free Time : Micro Museum » project is actually a project that is open to everyone. They are open workshops where people of all ages – children, youngsters, adults – work together in ever changing contexts. It is a contemporary form of popular art that requires no special skills, no special techniques and no costly materials. What is important to the Gorod Ustinov collective is the momentum in which the public participates and actively experiences the creative process in order to arrive at a collective and highly differentiated art. Specifically for the MSK, they want to create a ‘micro-museum Ghent ». For that purpose, residents of the city and outside will be asked to bring along objects with which they can make their own museum within the museum.

The project « Factories of Free Time : Micro Museum » is part of a European project in collaboration with the FRAC Lorraine in Metz and the Antoni Tàpies Foundation in Barcelona. In this project the museum also works together with WOCK : Werken aan Onderwijs, Cultuur en Kunst and With the support of Rotary Ghent.
