Faculty of Arts, 08.16 (8th floor), Blijde Inkomststraat 21, 3000 Leuven   Film screening « Famine-33 » (Holod-33). in the presence of the director Oles' Yanchuk Organized by the Center for Russian studies, the National committee for the remembrance of the Holodomor 1932-1933 and the Cades Master Program of Culture and development studies. Oles Yanchuk's work and efforts as a Director have been recognized throughout the world, when in 1991, he directed the full length feature film "Holod '33" ("Famine '33") picturing the horrific years of famine in the 1930's. Through the eyes of one family, Oles Yanchuk depicts the essence of the Ukrainian. The film was awarded the Grand Prize at the National Film Festival held in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1991. In 1992-93, the film was invited for screenings at the AFI International Film Festival (Los Angeles, Washington) and Film Forum in New York. The film sheds light on a, in the west, little known tragedy: the man-made famine of 1932-’33 in the Soviet-Union, particularily in Ukraine, 80 years ago today. Oles Yanchuk's debut as a Director began in 1989 when he made the short film "U daleku Put'" ("Taking Off"). The film received the Golden Trident Award at the Los Angeles Ukrainian Film Festival in 1990. After the success of his “Holod’33” in 1991, he worked on his second full-length feature, "Atentat" ("Assassination"), this time taking on the controversial topic of Ukraine and Ukrainians during the Second World War and its aftermath. Atentat is popular in Ukraine, the United States and Canada. The film took part in various international film festivals, such as the Gdansk International Film Festival (Poland), Karlovyj Var Film Festival (Czech Republic) and the Freedom Film Festival in Washington. In 1998, Atentat was screened at the International Film Festival in Los Angeles. All of Oles Yanchuk's films have been made at the Dovzhenko Film Studios in Kyiv, Ukraine. Yanchuk is a graduate of the Kyiv Theatrical Institute and the Kyiv Photographical Institute. He was born in Kyiv, Ukraine on September 29, 1956 and grew up in the town of Faustiv, Kyiv region in a family of teachers. He currently lives and works in Kyiv and runs his own production studio, Oles-Film, at the Dovzhenko Film Studios. He was honored with a prestigious Presidential award as an– "Accomplished Contributor to the Arts and Culture of Ukraine".
