Le projet The Moscow Trials reprend l'histoire du différend entre les artistes et les croyants orthodoxes - sous forme de théâtre politique.

En 2012, les images du procès des Pussy Riots provoquent l’indignation à travers le monde. En Russie même, l’événement n’est pourtant pris que comme une expression presque banale de l’oppression que la Russie poutinienne exerce sur l’art « dissident ».

En mars 2013, le Suisse Milo Rau, fondateur de l’International Institute of Political Murder, met en scène ce thème avec les techniques du théâtre politique : un tribunal de trois jours fut mis en place au centre Sakharov de Moscou. Rau réunit de vrais acteurs (artistes, politiciens, personnalités religieuses, citoyens et avocats) devant un tribunal fictif : l'art en confrontation avec la religion, la Russie « dissidente » en confrontation avec la Russie « réelle ». Le résultat est un « procès-spectacle » où sont plaidées les missions et les limites de l’art critique.

Le procès qui a pris 3 jours et qui fut assailli par les autorités russes et par des unités de Cosaques, a mené à un un scandale international et à une interdiction de voyage pour le metteur en scène Milo Rau. Le film The Moscow Trials illustre le projet et donne plus d'explications sur le fond historique et politique.

Het project The Moscow Trials neemt opnieuw het geschil tussen kunstenaars en orthodoxe gelovigen op - in de vorm van politiek theater.

De beelden van het Pussy Riot-proces lokten in 2012 wereldwijd verontwaardiging uit. In Rusland zelf werd het echter afgedaan als een « typisch » voorbeeld van de onderdrukking van zogenaamd dissidente kunst in het Rusland van Poetin.

In maart 2013 thematiseerde Milo Rau, de Zwitserse oprichter van het International Institute of Political Murder, dit onderwerp aan de hand van politiek theater : in het Zacharov Centrum in Moskou werd een rechtbank ingericht als podium voor een drie dagen durend showproces. Rau bracht « acteurs » uit het echte leven (kunstenaars, politici, kerkleiders, burgers en advocaten) samen in een fictieve rechtbank : kunst versus religie, ‘dissident’ Rusland versus het « echte » Rusland. Het resultaat was een « processhow », waarin de rol en de grenzen van kritische kunst bepleit worden.

Het proces, dat door de Russische overheid en Kozakkeneenheden werd bestormd, leidde tot een internationaal schandaal en een reisverbod voor de regisseur, Milo Rau. De film The Moscow Trials documenteert het project en werpt een licht op de historische en politieke achtergrond.

In 2012, images from the trial of members of Pussy Riot caused indignation around the globe. In Russia itself, though, the event was merely viewed as an almost commonplace expression of the oppression exerted by Putin’s Russia on « dissident » art.

In March 2013, Milo Rau, the Swiss founder of the International Institute of Political Murder, thematises this issue by drawing on the techniques of political theatre: a courtroom was set up at the Moscow Sakharov Center to provide a stage for a three-day show trial. Rau assembles real-life actors (artists, politicians, church leaders, citizens and lawyers) in a fictional court: art confronted with religion, “dissident” Russia confronted with the « real » Russia. The result is a « trial-show » in which the missions and limits of critical art are heard.

The 3-day-trial, stormed by the Russian authorities and by units of the Cossacks, led to an international scandal and a travel ban against the director Milo Rau. The film The Moscow Trials documents the project and illuminates the historical and political backgrounds.
