    Marsritmes en agressief slagwerk, het weergalmen van bombardementen en sirenes: in zijn Zevende Symfonie roept Shostakovich de terreur van oorlog op.

    Toen Leningrad van 8 september 1941 tot 27 januari 1944 door de Duitsers werd belegerd, bouwde Shostakovich aan barricades en groef hij mee aan de antitank-greppels rond de stad. Maar op 19 juli begon hij te schrijven aan zijn Symfonie: een groot werk dat zijn ervaringen uit de oorlog zou vereeuwigen. Later verklaarde hij: ‘Ik schreef mijn Zevende Symfonie, de Leningrad, snel. Ik kon haar niet schrijven. De oorlog woedde overal. Ik moest bij het volk zijn, ik wilde het beeld van ons belegerd land scheppen, het graveren in muziek’.

    Uiteindelijk kwam Leningrad nooit in handen van de Duitsers. Maar de belegering had aan duizenden mensen het leven gekost. Deze donkere, afschuwelijke en bloederige episode tijdens WO II werd door Shostakovich omgezet in een meeslepend, machtig werk.
