Rusland Platform UGent. Navalny and beyond Assessing the protests in Russia.
Zoom We kindly invite you to the online roundtable hosted by the Russia Platform on 18/3 at 18.30h: « Navalny and beyond : Assessing the protests in Russia », about the arrest and conviction of Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny and the debate about the political future of Russia. Navalny’s cunning use of social media and the wave of protests that has emerged in the wake of his arrest have raised questions about the sustainability of Putin’s reign. This roundtable event will critically address these questions by offering insights into the movement around Navalny and assessing to what extent the recent protests are a reflection of wider societal discontent rather than direct support for Navalny. Also the implications for Russia’s political future will be discussed, along with the role of traditional and digital media. As Russia’s relations with the European Union have further deteriorated over the poisoning and arrest of Navalny, the discussion will also focus on the question what the EU should do. Speakers :
Dmitry Goncharov (Higher School of Economics, St. Petersburg)
Nina Bachkatov (University of Liège, editor of www.russia-eurasia.net)
Aliaksei Kazharski (Comenius University Bratislava)
Rashid Gabdulhakov (Erasmus University, Rotterdam) Moderator : Fabienne Bossuyt (faculty of Political and Social Sciences, UGent) Best regards, Russia Platform Ghent University
