Peter the Great’s life and activities mean a lot to the Museum of the World Ocean. During the visit of the Russian Grand Embassy to Koenigsberg in 1697, Peter I was learning artillery at the forts of Friedrichsburg and Pillau. Colonel von Sternfeld, an experienced expert from Brandenburg, taught the 25-year-old apprentice and noted his talents. When Peter I came back to Moscow he got a certificate that read: “Peter Mikhailov should be recognized and honoured for his perfect talent in bomb throwing and as a careful and skillful artillery artist”. And Peter himself used to say several times “he was going to Europe to learn shipbuilding”.
Nowadays, the Friedrichsburg Gate, the surviving part of the fort, is an object of the Museum of the World Ocean. Its territory houses the Ship’s Revival Historical and Cultural Centre, including the Lodeyniy Shipyard Museum Complex.
Shortly before the Russian emperor’s birthday, the exhibition “The Grand Embassy of Peter I” was opened at the museum territory. This is a joint project of diverse Russian museums, which provided their archival and depository materials for the exhibition. The unique exhibition is presented on July 14 during the lecture.
