A commemoration of the fall of the Czar and the founding of the Communist regime
10 years after the Russian Revolution in 1917, Sergei M. Eisenstein caused an artistic uproar. His greatest epic, Oktober (or the ‘Ten Days that Shook the World’) commemorates the fall of the Czar and the founding of the Communist regime in what almost seems to be an eyewitness account.

The symphonic soundtrack is separate from the film, and was composed of works by emigrant and oppressed Soviet composers Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich and Mieczysław Weinberg.

Na de installatie van het communistische regime in Rusland bleef filmmaker Sergej Eisenstein trouw aan de idealen van het socialisme. Dat bracht hem in conflict met de autoriteiten en Stalin zelf. Hoewel die Eisenstein als controversieel beschouwde, kreeg hij toch de opdracht om, naar aanleiding van de tiende verjaardag van de Oktoberrevolutie, Oktober te regisseren.

Dit aanrijpende epos zorgde voor artistieke ophef: Eisenstein toonde de installatie van het communistische regime in een rauwe documentaire­stijl met ‘intellectuele montage’.
De live symfonische soundtrack werd samengesteld met medewerking van Russische-muziekexpert professor dr. Francis Maes uit het oeuvre van geëmigreerde en/of beteugelde Sovjetcomponisten, waaronder Sergej Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich en Mieczysław Weinberg.
